The Enigma Of Beauty – From and Content is a theme exhibition – curated by Barbara Martusciello – wich unfolds within the context of the magnificent Baths of Salice in Godiasco Salice Terme. The town located in that part of the province of Pavia between Piedmont and Emilia Romagna called Oltrepò Pavese, became a sophisticated roadhouse in the XIX century and, in the 20’s and 30’s of XX century, hosted famous travellers. Outstanding personalities like the poetess Ada Negri and the futurist Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, as many other guests, enjoyed the benefits of the sulphureous waters of the Mount Alpheus, source, among the richest in hydrogen sulfate in Italy, and those salso-bromo-iodic of Sales source, both most likely already known and used in Roman times. The guests of the Baths were keen on taking care of their health and restoring their beauty, also thanks to the glory of the enviroment, with its centuries-old park, and to a psychological predisposition wich allowed the mind to regenerate and recharge, as the body would recover strength and refill with a new allure. Ties and memories with this cultural milieu find their perfect enactment in this collective exhibition shown in the interiors of the current thermal building. It’s not by chance that The Enigma of Beauty – Form and Content draws inspiration from literary and poetic stimuli: from the quote of the great Russian writer and philosopher Fedor Dostoevskij, “Beauty is an enigma”, or the wise thought of the Cinese philosopher Confucius, “Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it”. Both reflections uphold an idea of beauty as a mysterious whole of Form and Content – indeed – of Aesthetics and Ethics, physical and ideal, of, more than anything else, symmetry and asymmetry, very much in line with the thinking of Charles Baeudelaire: “irregularity, that is the unforeseen, the surprise, the wonder, are an essential part and the very character of beauty”. On these assumptions, a few already well-known authors of the artistic Italian scene express themselves along with some emerging ones. Luca Capuano, Simone Racheli, Virginia Ryan, Lapo Simeoni, Alessandro Valeri present installations and mixed media artworks of intense, conceptuality, purposefully located in the spaces of the thermal center, where they create a fascinating short circuit in wich every single work stands out as a visual setting with a particularly engaging expressive force. Far from didatic. The exhibition features also photographs by Elio Di Girolamo, Franz Gustinchic, Guido Laudani, Annamaria Mazzei, Claudio Nardulli, Claudio Orlandi, very diverse in terms of language and perspective on the theme, but with a common poetics: all absolutely devoid of any explanatory stance. Moreover, there are the displays with the animated GIFs by Chiara Pellicano, wich, with their graphic style, treat the theme with elegant irony.

All work create an artistic journey within beauty and a sensorial involvement through different materials, compositions, styles and languages, wich the artists use to express their personal idea of beauty, not necessarily associated with the body of the feminine, rather as the expressio of the variety and complexity of the concept of aesthetics, as the possibile enchantment, energy, charm, wich can be found in both the tangible and immaterial elements of life, in its brightest, but also in its darkest folds.
