MONDO – Count down per Dubai Expo 2020. Dal 1° ottobre al 31 marzo, per la prima volta nella storia, si svolgerà un’edizione di Expo in medio oriente. Follows the interview in Italian and English.
Il teatro dell’esposizione mondiale sarà Dubai e per l’occasione, ho intervistato Alexandra Oikonomidou che ricopre il ruolo di Senior Project Manager Look & Wayfinding.
Ci puoi parlare della tua esperienza nelle precedenti manifestazioni sportive?
La mia carriera è iniziata nel 1995 quando sono entrata in Ogilvy e Mather in Grecia e il settore pubblicitario mi ha assorbito e fatto innamorare della strategia creativa. La creatività determina e motiva tutta la mia vita professionale. Quando Atene ha vinto i Giochi Olimpici mi sono detta “Voglio far parte di questo evento internazionale” e sono riuscita a raggiungere questo obiettivo nei 2 anni che precedevano l’inizio dell’evento. Da qui il via dei miei 11 eventi di tipo olimpico fino ad ora. Ho desiderato sin da subito una carriera che si espandesse oltre le frontiere greche e così è stato. Ho iniziato a viaggiare in tutto il mondo per partecipare al maggior numero possibile di eventi. Ho lavorato a Pechino per 4 anni, Torino, Vancouver, Londra, Baku, Rio De Janeiro, Ashgabat, Jakarta, Abu Dhabi e ora sto lavorando per EXPO 2020 che per la prima volta non è un evento sportivo ma è una nuova ed incredibile esperienza.
My career started in 1995 when I joined Ogilvy and Mather in Greece and the advertising sector absorbed me and made me fall in love with creative strategy. Creativity is something that motivates me all my life and the opportunity to start my career from this business sector developed a lot my creative senses for the future. When Athens won the Olympic Games I said to myself “I want to be part of this National event” and I did it 2 years before the event started. This was the beginning of my 11 Olympic Type Events until now. When I saw the volume of the Olympic Games influence, I envisioned a career that would expand a lot further than the Greek frontiers and started traveling all over the world to join as many events as possible. I worked in Beijing for 4 years, Torino, Vancouver, London, Baku, Rio De Janeiro, Ashgabat, Jakarta, Abu Dhabi and now I am working for EXPO 2020 which for the first time is not a sport event but has a lot to teach me.
Che ruolo avevi e attualmente a Dubai di cosa ti occupi?
Per EXPO 2020 sto supervisionando la pianificazione, la produzione e l’installazione di tre diversi progetti che sono l’applicazione del marchio, l’ambito della segnaletica stradale in tutto il sito EXPO, nonché un progetto davvero unico che è la decorazione tematica esterna del villaggio con i padiglioni che ospitano 124 paesi partecipanti a EXPO. Quest’ultimo è una nuova sfida per me molto stimolante. Quello che mi piace di più di questo lavoro, oltre al tipo di esperienza diversa, è la possibilità di conoscere, attingere ed imparare dal patrimonio culturale di ogni Paese attraverso la loro gente, costumi tradizionali, cucina nazionale e paesaggi naturali.
For EXPO 2020 I am supervising the planning, production and installation of three different projects which are the Brand application, the Way finding Signage scope all over the EXPO site, as well as a very unique project which is the external Decoration of the Thematic pavilions hosting 124 countries participating in EXPO. This last one is a new project to me and I really enjoy it because apart from doing what I know already from experience, I learn a lot from each Country’s cultural heritage by applying representations of their people, traditional costumes, national cuisine and natural landscaping on their facades.
Da quanto tempo ti sei trasferita a Dubai?
Mi sono trasferita a Dubai nel settembre 2019 raggiungendo un obiettivo personale che era quello di estendere la mia carriera negli Emirati a partire dalle Olimpiadi Speciali di Abu Dhabi nel marzo 2019. Gli Emirati Arabi Uniti sono un paese fantastico in cui vivere, lavorare ed inoltre è l’unico paese che c’è il sole quasi tutto l’anno.
I moved to Dubai in September 2019 achieving a personal goal which was to extend my career to the Emirates starting with Abu Dhabi Special Olympics in March 2019. The UAE is an amazing country to live, to work and apart form the extreme heat during the summer period it is the only country that there is sunshine almost all year round.
Inizialmente quale era il progetto dell’Expo? è cambiato in questi due anni?
Ogni progetto EXPO ha un proprio tema e obiettivi basati sui valori locali che vengono fissati in anticipo. Questi valori, una volta definiti, dovrebbero riflettersi in tutti gli aspetti del progetto. EXPO 2020 si articola in 3 Distretti Tematici che si fondano sui valori di Mobilità, Sostenibilità e Opportunità. “Unisciti alla creazione di un nuovo mondo” è il tema principale di EXPO 2020 e la dice lunga sugli obiettivi dell’evento. I valori di EXPO 2020 non sono cambiati e il COVID-19 li ha resi ancora più precisi e necessari.
Every EXPO project has its own theme and objectives based on the local values that are being set in advance. These values -once defined-should be reflected across all aspects of the project. EXPO 2020 is divided in 3 Thematic Districts that are founded in the values of Mobility, Sustainability and Opportunity. “Join the making of a new World” is the main theme of EXPO 2020 and it says a lot about the event objectives. The values of EXPO 2020 haven’t changed and COVID-19 made them even more accurate and necessary.
Attualmente stai ancora collaborando per la manifestazione che è stata posticipata di un anno. Questo anno in più di lavoro vi ha beneficiato molto nell’organizzazione?
Come per tutti i mega eventi, EXPO 2020 ha dovuto decidere di procedere con un rinvio di un anno, aderendo alle conseguenze globali che la pandemia ha portato a tutti gli eventi, compresi i Giochi Olimpici di Tokyo. Il rinvio ci ha dato la possibilità di riflettere sul livello di servizio che vogliamo fornire agli ospiti di EXPO 2020 e di testarlo in anticipo in modo da essere certi che tutto sarà pronto per il 1 ottobre 2021 in rispetto di tutte le misure di salute e sicurezza previste per il COVID-19.
As with all mega events, EXPO 2020 had to decide to proceed with a one-year postponing, adhering to the global consequences the pandemic brought to all events including the Tokyo Olympic Games. The postponement gave us the chance to think through about the level of service we want to deliver to the EXPO 2020 guests and to test it in advance so that we are certain that everything will be ready for October 1st 2021 and all health and safety measures will be met post COVID-19.
Immagino che i tuoi colleghi e il tuo ambiente di lavoro sia multiculturale, ce ne puoi parlare? Da quali paesi vengono I tuoi colleghi?
È vero che tutti gli eventi di questa importanza devono avere persone provenienti da tutto il mondo con esperienza di eventi internazionali. Il lavoro di squadra, l’attitudine al problem solving e l’entusiasmo sono componenti chiave per i team che lavorano a questo progetto. Ho colleghi da tutto il mondo tra cui India, Siria, Russia, Malawi, Regno Unito, Stati Uniti, Canada, Australia, Cipro, Messico e Grecia e sto lavorando a distanza con un’agenzia di design scozzese. All’inizio sembra complicato entrare in contatto con tutte queste persone e lavorare insieme come una squadra, ma dopo tutti questi anni è diventato abbastanza facile trovare un modo per lavorare efficacemente e superare le differenze culturali.
It is true that all the events of this volume need to have people from all over the world with international events experience. Team work, problem solving attitude and enthusiasm are key components for the teams working on this project. I have colleagues from all over the world including India, Syria, Russia, Malawi, UK, US, Canada, Australia, Cyprus, Mexico and Greece and I am working remotely with a design agency from Scotland. It seems complicated at the beginning to connect with all this people and work together as a team, but after all these years it has become quite easy to find a way to work effectively and overcome any cultural differences.
Di cosa si occupa precisamente il team che gestisci?
Il mio team è coinvolto in tutti e tre i progetti che ho menzionato sopra, assumendo parti della consegna del progetto.
Devo menzionare qui che ho la possibilità di lavorare con due giovani professionisti di Special Olympics che si sono uniti a me anche a EXPO 2020: uno viene dall’India e l’altro dalla Siria. Shwetta Shetty, dall’India ha 28 anni ma la sua etica lavorativa e professionalità superano i giovani della sua età. Lo stesso vale per Reem Almhanna proveniente dalla Siria. È la prima volta nei miei anni di lavoro che incontro due giovani professionisti dai quali prendo molte lezioni su credibilità, resistenza alla mediocrità e flessibilità. Sono molto orgogliosa di vederli crescere professionalmente ogni giorno e di essere accanto a loro.
My team is involved on all three projects I mentioned above, taking over parts of the project delivery. I have to mention here that i have the chance to work with two young professionals from Special Olympics who joined me in EXPO 2020 as well and one is from India and the other one from Syria. Shwetta Shetty, from India is 28 years old but her work ethics and professionalism over exceed the young of her age. The same applies for Reem Almhanna coming from Syria. It Is the first time in my working years that I meet two young professionals from whom I take a lot of lessons about credibility, resistance to mediocrity and flexibility. I am very proud to see them growing professionally every day and being next to them.
Ormai mancano pochi mesi allo start, siete pronti?
La prontezza è sempre un problema per i grandi eventi e molti cambiamenti stanno avvenendo anche mentre ne parliamo. Dopo tanti anni di esperienza devo dire che il cambiamento fa parte della nostra normale routine in questo lavoro e non dovrebbe essere una sorpresa quando si verifica. È la natura di questo lavoro che non può essere realizzato senza cambiamenti. Un piccolissimo cambiamento nella finitura di una parete può influenzare l’applicazione del marchio, il materiale utilizzato e le dimensioni delle opere d’arte, quindi devo essere flessibile ed essere guidata dalla soluzione più idonea per poter far fronte a qualsiasi possibile cambiamento che si può presentare.
Readiness is always an issue for big events and a lot of changes are happening as we speak. After so many years of experience I should say that change is part of our ordinary routine in this job and it shouldn’t be a surprise when it occurs. It is the nature of this job that cannot be accomplished without changes. A very small change in a wall finishing can affect the brand application, the material used and the dimensions of the artworks so I need to be flexible and be solution driven so that I can meet any possible change arises at any time.
Quali sono le aspettative? Ci puoi dare qualche anteprima sul look che avrà l’Expo di Dubai?
Ci saranno tante belle sorprese che non posso svelare a questo punto altrimenti non sarebbero sorprese. Quello che posso dire però è che EXPO 2020 ospiterà il massimo sviluppo tecnologico di tutti i tempi e, anche solo per questo, varrà la pena visitare questo grande evento. EXPO 2020 sarà un investimento sulla crescita futura di tutti e sulla percezione del mondo, e il mio consiglio è di non perdere l’occasione di visitarlo.
There will be a lot of beautiful surprises that I cannot disclose at this point otherwise they wouldn’t be surprises. What I can say though is that EXPO 2020 will host the ultimate technological development of all times and for this only it is worth visiting this great event because it will be a investment on everyone’s future growth and world perception. EXPO 2020 is an eye-opening event that we shouldn’t miss if possible.
Qual’è il concept che ha determinato tutto il progetto dell’ Expo?
Posso dirvi che i tre distretti tematici saranno unici e colorati in modo che il visitatore possa facilmente identificare dove si trova. Nel distretto Opportunità prevarrà il colore arancione, mentre in Mobilità e Sostenibilità saranno i colori fondamentali il Blu e il Verde. Devo dire a questo punto che tutto il branding di EXPO 2020 è un lavoro molto dettagliato che è stato fatto quasi 5 anni fa e che, anche se la grafica è cambiata nel tempo, i principi fondamentali sono rimasti invariati.
I can tell you that the three thematic districts are going to be unique and colored in a way that the visitor can easily identify where he is. In Opportunity district, orange color will prevail, while in Mobility and Sustainability, Blue and Green will be the fundamental colors. I need to say at this point that all the branding of EXPO 2020 is a very detailed work that has been done almost 5 years ago and even if the graphics have changed overtime, the main principles remain.
Ci puoi illustrare qualche aspetto in particolare della brand image dell’ Expo di Dubai?
EXPO 2020 non è come nessun altro evento e le sue dinamiche sono completamente diverse dagli eventi sportivi e dai Giochi Olimpici, quindi solo questo è un punto molto distintivo di questo evento. EXPO 2020 inizia il 1 ottobre 2021 e termina il 31 marzo 2022. È il mega evento più lungo che esista. Ciò richiede sia una pianificazione e che una manutenzione meticolosa, con molte implicazioni in termini di risorse. È un evento globale che porterà un cambiamento globale in mobilità, opportunità e sostenibilità e la sua influenza durerà per decenni. Vedrai…..
EXPO 2020 is not like any other event and its dynamics are completely different from sport events and the Olympic Games so that only is a very distinctive point of this event. EXPO 2020 is starting in October 1st 2021 and finishes in March 31st 2022. It is the longest mega event that exists. This requires a meticulous planning and maintenance with a lot of resources implications. It is a global event that will bring global change in Mobility, Opportunity and sustainability and its influence will last for decades. You will see…..
